Acupuncture Point Series – Stomach Meridian: St 8

St 8 Head Tied (Tou Wei)

St 8 is an excellent point for the mind and spirit – when the person is stuck in over-processing, is in mental turmoil, complains of being woolly-headed. As a crossing point with the Gall Bladder, it draws on powers of new beginnings. This forges a path through obstructions, breaking through the mental stodginess and exhaustion by overthinking.

When we tie our thoughts together we experience the connective relationship between them, whereas when we are in a state of confusion our thoughts churn around in an ever-repeating circle without connection or resolution.

When we are too full of thoughts, this point will unite the wisdom of our hearts, centre us to bring inner stability. We can become anxious and tied to old patterns, St 8 helps us to let go of these old patterns and calmly look at what is troubling and worrying us.

“Tou Wei” is often talked about as being an important part of the head, because this is where our thoughts are tied, held together, maintained, and upheld. The Chinese Character of “Tou” is an image of a dish on which meat is served, and a head meaning a chief. The Chinese Character of “Wei” is an image of silk threads and a bird with a short tail, meaning to uphold and hold together.

St 8 is an excellent point for the mind and spirit: when the person is stuck in over-processing, is in mental turmoil, complains of being woolly-headed.
